What Is the Most Popular Anime in Each State?

Ohio: One Piece

Ohioans can relate to Luffy’s swashbuckling adventures of leaving his home town and setting out to see the world, because who wouldn’t want to get the fuck out of Ohio.

Oklahoma: Detective Conan

There’s nothing else to do in Oklahoma. Might as well start watching a series that’s been running consistently since 1994 and has over 1000 episodes.

Oregon: My Neighbor Totoro

No one appreciates Hayao Miyazaki’s majesty of work quite like Oregon. Perhaps his most iconic film, My Neighbor Totoro, is the most popular anime there. They don’t care if it’s “mainstream” or whatever, it’s a wholesome story that transcends age and demographics, just like Miyazaki’s other movies.

Pennsylvania: FLCL

Short, sweet, to the point, and full of attitude, Pennsylvania loves Fooly Cooly and can watch it on repeat endlessly. They’re just gonna pretend all those remakes and sequels don’t exist too, just like the rest of us.

Rhode Island: Clannad

(Don’t say Family Guy don’t say Family Guy don’t say Family Guy) uhhh yeah they just really like Clannad a lot in Rhode Island. Yeah!

South Carolina: Baki

There are numerous Baki anime series that adapt different story chunks from the manga, and South Carolina loves all of ‘em. They just appreciate how subversive and brutal it can be, and how it doesn’t contend to traditional art styles of anime by looking ugly as sin.

South Dakota: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)

South Dakota just really appreciates the original Fullmetal Alchemist’s unique story. It doesn’t matter if it deviates greatly from the source material if they improve upon it, they say. They even like the sequel movie Conqueror of Shamballa as contentious as it may be.

Tennessee: Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad

Nashville, Tennessee is Music City, USA, so Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad’s coming-of-age story about a teenager picking up a guitar and playing in a rock band really pops off there. Matter of fact, the people of Nashville hope that one day Beck will play a show at Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N’ Roll Steakhouse, not realizing that they are only cartoon characters.

Texas: Attack on Titan

Everything’s bigger in Texas, as they say, and that includes the titans. Texans are also obsessed with “protecting the border” so maybe they mistakenly see the tragic heroes of Attack on Titan within themselves.

Utah: Revolutionary Girl Utena

Man, I have had so many friends try to explain to me what happens in this anime and I still have no idea. The citizens of Utah seem to get it, though, maybe I should check it out some time.

Vermont: Neon Genesis Evangelion

This is Bernie Sanders’ favorite anime, so we’re just going to chalk it up to saying that all of Vermont likes it as well. Seriously, the next time you see Bernie at a rally or a fundraiser or what have you, ask him about Evangelion. He won’t shut up about it!

Virginia: Demon Slayer

This anime really took the world by storm, huh? With its flashy visuals and simple yet gripping story, Virginia absolutely went nuts for Demon Slayer. You couldn’t even get a seat to the Mugen Train movie when it released– it was sold out every night!

Washington: Goodnight Punpun

While not technically an anime (yet?) Washington loves this depressing coming-of-age manga about a little bird boy and his awful little bird family. I know it’s dark and dreary up there in Seattle all the time, but maybe you guys could lighten up and watch a couple episodes of Demon Slayer like they do in Virginia or something?

West Virginia: Great Teacher Onizuka

West Virginia is the lowest ranked state in the nation for education, so they need a good influence. Who better than Eikichi Onizuka, a former delinquent turned school teacher? He could teach kids some life lessons along the way too, probably.

Wisconsin: Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Wisconsin was very specific about which Gundam series they like. There are many Gundam shows and movies out there, but Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is the one Wisconsin likes, period.

Wyoming: Cowboy Bebop

What can I say, Wyoming loves the classics! Just don’t mention that live-action Netflix show around them though. It makes them cry.
