Sea of Thieves finally arrives on PlayStation 5 this month, and more details have emerged explaining how the game handles cross-platform play and cross-progression. Having an account with Microsoft is a basic requirement, but this enables multi-platform functionality.
UPDATED April 30
Sea Of Thieves PS5: Is There Crossplay?
Crossplay, or cross-platform play, is simply the ability for a player on one platform to matchmake and play with players on an entirely different platform. Sea of Thieves has confirmed that cross-play is supported on launch, allowing for a cohesive playerbase spread across PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Sea Of Thieves PS5: Can Crossplay Be Disabled?
Yes, there are PlayStation-only Sea of Thieves servers: crossplay can be disabled entirely on PS5, allowing players to game exclusively with their fellow PlayStation users.
Sea Of Thieves PS5: Is There Controller-Only Crossplay?
Crossplay on Sea of Thieves PS5 and other platforms can also be restricted based on input method, either controller, or mouse and keyboard. This allows console gamers with controllers to play exclusively with each other, regardless of whether they’re on Xbox or PlayStation 5. This functionality should also filter out any players using officially sanctioned mice and keyboards on their consoles.
The DualSense controller gets tailored support for haptics, adaptive triggers, as well as the built-in mic and speaker.

Sea Of Thieves PS5: Is There Cross-Progression?
Cross-progression is the ability for a player to continue their game from exactly where they’ve progressed, regardless of platform. Sea of Thieves fully supports cross-progression on PS5, by linking PlayStation and Microsoft accounts. Previously created characters can be shared across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Progress that will be shared includes:
- Commendations
- Cosmetics (with the exception of a handful of platform exclusives)
- Twitch Drops
- Gold
- Doubloons
- Ancient Coins
The platform exclusivity of certain cosmetics and items goes both ways: the PS5 pre-order and Closed Beta bonuses cannot be accessed on Xbox or PC, though they are fully visible by all players.
Finally, most completed Achievements, whether on Xbox or Steam, will automatically unlock their corresponding Trophies on PS5, as soon as players login for the first time. Certain other unspecified Trophies may need to be replayed for them to count correctly.
That’s everything on cross-platform play and cross-platform progression in Sea of Thieves for PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam PC.
